Course Description:
The goal of Diabetes program is to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by diabetes and its complications by increasing awareness of the seriousness of the disease and the value of its treatment and prevention.
Health care providers are evidence-based and this program describes the essential components of quality diabetes care. Ongoing, comprehensive diabetes care can prevent or control diabetes-related macrovascular complications( heart disease, stroke, and circulatory problems) and microvascular complications (blindness, amputations,and end-stage renal disease).
With proper education and self-care, people with diabetes should expect to lead long, active, and productive lives. Health care providers can help them reach that goal with up-to-date education.
- Describe diagnosis criteria for prediabetes, type 1 and 2, insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity and gestational diabetes
- Explain blood glucose targets for preop or treatment goals
- Describe treatments and prevention for hospital related hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
- Identify the role of nutrition and nutrition management
- Identify the pharmacological options available
- Describe basic diabetes drug interactions
Instructor:
Ms. Shwide-Slavin, MS, RD, BC-ADM, CDE, CPT has been in private practice in New York City since June, 2000. She has specialized in working with people with diabetes for over 15 years. Prior to her private practice she developed and implemented comprehensive diabetes and nutrition education programs, set up non-physician based diabetes education centers for private corporations as well as Beth Israel Medical Center with Gerald Bernstein, MD.
She is Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management, Certified as a Diabetes Educator and Insulin Pump Training and a Registered Dietitian. She is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the American Dietetic Association, serving on national committee’s and task forces including the 2005 AADE Standards or Practice and Performance review, AADE Professional Practice Committee and Professional Development Committee, 2005 ADA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance and the Medicare Referral Form committee. In addition she is a member of the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association (Nutrition Subdivision), Food and Nutrition Council of Greater New York, Greater New York Dietetic Association and the Society for Nutrition Education.
